St Dupont Lighter Serial Number
Sep 24, 2012 Can anyone help me identify this st Dupont lighter? It is a silver ligther with a gold plated inside. There's a serial number stamped on the bottom (not very clear in the picture): M3GB43. It is probably a pretty old ligther.
It's hard to tell the age exactly, only ST Dupont themselves might have some sort of serial number registry, but they're not very responsive to most inquiries. You can tell from the flame height adjuster that it's a newer ligne 1, and not the older style. That said, it has to be made after 1965. The design looks a bit dated, and that said it's probably no newer than the 80s.
So probably somewhere between 65 and 1985 would be my guess. It's definitely repairable. The newer style ligne 1's all are. Whether you could repair it yourself or not all depends on your skill level and what is wrong. It probably needs all the seals/gaskets replaced at the very least. Download synergy video express.
You'll probably have to take it apart to even have a better idea of what's actually wrong. Generally most authorized ST Dupont repair places will probably charge you $60-90 to fix it, but in my experience most can be fixed if you're willing to spend the money.
I will try to contact Dupont once more and see if they have this registry. I live in the Netherlands and the nearest official repair centre is in Belgium, at Dupont themselves. And they are not very responsive indeed. All the local stores also keep refering me to Dupont, not very helpful. Anyway I'm going to take the lighter apart and see if i can find anything wrong in there by myself.
If not I will try to find someone at Dupont's who DOES speak proper English or Dutch. I am definitely willing to spend the money because it was my grandfathers lighter. I'll get back on this and thanks for the help!

This is a short guide on how to quickly determine if your S.T. Dupont Linge (Line) 2 Lighter is authentic.
These are the lighters most 'faked' on Ebay. There are also counterfeit Gatsby lighters I have seen on Ebay as well.
Usually persons selling have little to no feedback, 100 points or less. A lot are from China, but it isn't hard to setup an account to make it look like your somewhere your not. Also the selling party might not even realize that the lighter is a fake, the Line 2 counterfeit lighters look exactly like real ones, depending on model/design being counterfeited. If the selling party does not picture the bottom of the lighter, where the serial number is, its Probably fake. If it looks the the numbers are lined up perfectly, if they are engraved, its fake. ST Dupont stamps their lighters with numbers not aligned in a straight line, some numbers looking higher or lower then others. Counterfeited line 2 have serials engraved in a straight line.
